Lean Startup Lab goes to Malaysia

Lean Startup Lab goes to Malaysia

May 25, 2026

A landmark 48-hour bootcamp unites 30 students across four Malaysian universities in a first-of-its-kind offshore edition of the Maldives-born startup programme

Sparkhub, the Maldives-based startup ecosystem builder, has successfully organised the Lean Startup Lab — Malaysia Edition in partnership with Asia Pacific University (APU) and the Maldives Students Association of APU. The two-day intensive bootcamp conducted from 23rd May to 26th May 2026, brought together 30 students, 28 Maldivian and 2 international from four of Malaysia's leading universities, offering a rigorous, hands-on introduction to lean entrepreneurship.

The participants were represented from Malaysia's top universities: Asia Pacific University, Sunway University, Taylor's University, and Monash University Malaysia.

Lean Startup Lab is a product developed and refined by Sparkhub, built upon the Lean Methodology and inspired by the global Lean Startup Machine framework. Sparkhub first introduced this concept to the Maldives in 2019 through a partnership with Dhiraagu, before evolving it into Lean Startup Maldives, running editions in 2020, 2021, 2023, and most recently in Addu City in 2024 in partnership with Dhiraagu.

The Malaysia Edition marks the second time Sparkhub has taken its flagship product beyond Maldivian shores, reflecting the organisation's ambition to establish a globally relevant startup offering.

Guiding the participants as the lead facilitator was Mr. Dhanish Athif, a seasoned lean-certified trainer with years of experience of conducting Lean Startup workshops in Maldives and Malaysia. He conducted the workshop by simulating the pressure and pace of real entrepreneurship. Teams were challenged to validate real problems and genuine customer needs before ever considering solutions, a cornerstone of lean thinking.

"This year we are working toward bringing our products into the global space. Though we are based in Maldives, we want to ensure our programmes benefit other startup ecosystems around the world. This is the second initiative we have taken beyond our borders to be tested and piloted as a global startup event, and it has been highly successful. We are planning to launch further such initiatives into the global startup ecosystem space."

Hussain Jinan, Co-founder & CEO, SparkHub

"We wanted to bring something fresh — something that would make a real impact beyond the usual sports and cultural activities. This has been a total life changer for all those who took part in the 48-hour bootcamp. It is a life skill they can now carry with them every day."

Zeedhan Zaeem, President, Maldives Students Association of Asia Pacific University

Adding further depth to the programme, Mr. Abdulla Shafeeu (Abo) led a compelling case study session centred on a successful startup that applied the Lean Startup methodology in practice. He shared how Akuru Type structured its business model and conducted its customer validations — offering participants a concrete, real-world example of lean principles at work. Complementing this, Mr. Shafiu Hussain facilitated the Concierge MVP session, delivering a hands-on experience where participants explored how rapid prototyping can be achieved swiftly and effectively using the latest AI tools.

The 48-hour programme was further enriched by a distinguished group of Maldivian mentors, who brought with them candid accounts of their own entrepreneurial journeys. On day one, they guided teams in deeply understanding and refining their problem statements; on day two, they shifted focus to solution validation, helping teams stress-test their ideas against real customer behaviour. The mentors included Ahmed Rishwan (Rishy), Mahfooz Ali (Mau Motion), and Afrah of Family Room KL, joined by SparkHub partners Yaamin and Aiesha Adnan, whose collective experience spanned industries and markets across the region.

The Lean Startup Lab - Malaysia Edition stands as a meaningful milestone not only for Sparkhub and its partners, but for Maldivian students in the diaspora who rarely get to take part in such entrepreneurial, mindset changing workshops. By bringing the programme to where these students live and study, Sparkhub is reinforcing its commitment to building entrepreneurial capacity across the Maldivian community, wherever they may be.
